The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman containing several personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes depict the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic involves controlling the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
