The English along with Welsh Pitted in the Same Group for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by rugby icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales will face off in an identical group for the 2027 RWC, promising a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing echoes their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Other Notable Group Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, both impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa before the final, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the pools play out in line with the current world rankings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both the English and Ireland all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Opener

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
