RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
