Stuart Broad has confessed that he remains uncertain about a consistent plan to dismiss Steve Smith and warns that the Ashes could become a lengthy battle if the English team fails to remove the batter early in his innings.

Smith's Dominant Record

Steve Smith, who is considered a top-tier modern-era players, holds an impressive average of 56.01 in Ashes cricket with 12 tons to his name.

Smith, who has participated in every Ashes series since 2010-11, was the top scorer during the 2017-18 and subsequent 2019 contests, registering 774 and 687 runs respectively while Broad was still playing for England.

The Bowler's Challenge

"I recall when he made that massive double century in Perth during 2017 and every delivery seemed to hit the sweet spot for the full duration," the bowler revealed on a sports program.

"Every delivery I attempted ended up meeting the center of his blade."

"He maintains that unique mentality of 'this pitch suits me, and I won't be dismissed."

Statistical Superiority

Broad got the better of Smith 11 times in international tests - exceeding by three other bowlers - yet confesses he still doesn't know a reliable method.

Smith's career average of just over 56 increases to nearly 60 when on home soil. Solely the great Ricky Ponting with 41 tons has achieved greater numbers than his 36 test centuries for Australia.

Technical Challenges

Broad stated: "Clearly Smith's approach has changed during different phases, but I remain unable to clearly identify this approach works to get him out."

"This demonstrates an amazing ability of his. He's incredibly challenging to bowl against. On occasion it appears like you haven't delivered a bad delivery and it nevertheless travels for four runs."

Recent Form and Preparation

Smith's performance experienced a slight decline between mid-2023 to late 2024 when he went 23 innings failing to score a hundred, but he recovered with two centuries against India last winter and added 131 and 141 runs against Sri Lanka at the start of this year.

Subsequent to a two-month break, he commenced his buildup for the upcoming series in the end of October and promptly made a 118-run innings in his first appearance.

Winning Approach

"To emerge triumphant, it's essential to limit his average to under 50, right?" Broad questioned.

"He will score a ton, it's his specialty."

"Should he maintain 40, that would be a minimum of fifteen less than his usual output, so you're doing brilliantly. In my opinion you must remove him before he settles."

"Should the English team don't succeed in his dismissal within the first forty scoring shots, it's going to be a drawn-out battle."

Evolution of Tactics

England has tried different approaches to address Smith's unusual approach throughout 14 Ashes series competition.

The bowler mentioned creating a fresh away-swinger aimed at Smith before last year's contest, while English bowlers have aimed at Smith's leg-side, pitched away from off stump and tried bowling for catches at leg gully during that year's matches - a contest where Smith began with back-to-back hundreds at that venue.

"I recall when Jason Roy was placed at that specific fielding spot, and he kept diving in both directions for the opening overs, barely failing to catch on several occasions," the bowler remembered.

"Smith escaped, scored two centuries in that game, unbelievable innings."

Broad further stated: "I participated in a strategy session about the Australian batsman in that season and they suggested perhaps we should attempt going for the base of the stumps early'}."

"Is that so, could we examine the frequency with which he's lost his wickets in home matches during the last five years?' A single instance."

Archer's Potential Impact

The forthcoming contest, beginning in the Western Australian city (early morning GMT), will probably involve the batsman confronting Jofra Archer for their initial test meeting since that year, when he was notably unsettled and struck by a bouncer during Archer's aggressive bowling at that famous venue.

The batsman has always pointed out that Archer failed to remove him in that particular Test - he temporarily retired and got out later leg before wicket to Woakes upon his return - though the bowler succeeded to have him caught on the pull shot in an ODI during 2024.
